After losing his parents in a tragic accident, 23-year-old David Shally takes his high school friend Julio Cruz on a trip to see the world. Because for one wonderful month in the summer of 1994, the entire world came to the United States to celebrate the love of the world's game, soccer, and these two Jersey boys came along for the ride. On their journey, David and Julio experience elation, loss, hilarity, and heartbreak, getting through it all with a heady mix of naive bravado, glibness and alcohol. They also develop a deep love for and understanding of planet Earth's favorite sport.

Follow David and Julio as they go from soccer novices to aficionados. Sit in the stands with them, and watch the games through their eyes. Experience for yourself the exquisite heartbreak only soccer can provide.

30 Days Across America edition by Christopher Dwyer Literature Fiction eBooks

30 Days Across America is a book worth reading; certainly for soccer fans, but also for anyone who is looking for a good summer read. It opens up the World Cup, and soccer in general, for the non-soccer aficionado. This book touches on other topics: several types of addiction, grieving, and issues of class and race, especially in education.

It is, on the one hand, a sports dramady. I believe it is also something else: the polar opposite of the archetypal American road trip book, that is at once memoir but also journal of self discovery. Mr. Dwyer has written, intentionally or not, the post-modern response. The journey is one of escape, not of self discovery. If there is any self awareness at all, it is coming home that brings it.

I'd recommend 30 Days Across America to anyone: soccer fan or not.

30 Days Across America edition by Christopher Dwyer Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

30 Days Across America is about soccer in the same way that Filed of Dreams is about baseball and Moby Dick is about whaling. You really don't have to like soccer to like this book. Chris Dwyer manages to convey the excitement that fans feel as they agonize for ninety minutes of play time at games that can end with a 0-0 score.

The book is about America and America meeting the world as two college kids, one with more dollars than sense, race around the country to see as many 1994 World Cup games as they can. A sidetrip into the dark side of alcohol abuse adds to the drama. Most of all it is a story about friendship between an unlikely pair of Jersey boys. One from Montclair and the other from West New York, town separated by about 15 miles of road and a fairly vast socio-economic chasm.
Amazing story about loss, pain, and the determination of the spirit. I'm not a soccer fan, but I cared about the games and how the characters lived and died on each kick. I also loved all the local references to food on each coast. Great work! A must read.
After losing both parents in a car accident, a twenty something year old guy undertakes an epic trip back and forth through the U.S. Following the World Cup. His companion, a quintessential Hudson County Latino, learns the essence of the game and the competitive national culture that brings passion and fun to this odyssey. In the end it is an adventurous excursion that speaks to healing and friendship and will please both the "football" aficionado and people who wonder what the excitement is all about.
Fun read about the ‘94 World Cup.
